The Dos and Don'ts of Washing Your Acrylic Blanket
To be honest – how many of you are currently wrapped in one of those fuzzy acrylic blankets? Me Same. I basically live in mine from October to April.
But after I totally murdered my first one (RIP, gorgeous teal blanket from Target) by throwing it in a hot wash, I became a bit... intense about blanket care. So from one cozy human to another, here's what actually works when it comes to the best way to wash a knit throw blanket.
Washing:
Cold water only. I know, I know – hot feels cleaner. But trust me, hot water makes acrylic fibers get all stiff and sad. Cold keeps them happy.
Gentle cycle. This isn't the time for the "heavy duty" setting. Think of it as giving your blanket a gentle swirl, not a rollercoaster ride.
Skip the fabric softener. Seriously! It builds up on the fibers and makes them less soft over time. A bit of mild detergent is all you need.
Drying (This is the most important part!):
Best way: Lay it flat over some chairs or a drying rack. Yeah, it takes time, but it prevents stretching.
If you're lazy like me and need to use the dryer:
☑️ LOW heat only – and I mean the lowest setting
☑️ Pull it out while still slightly damp – this is the secret!
☑️ Fluff it up with some dryer balls or clean tennis balls on no-heat mode
Quick Don'ts:
No bleach (obvious, but had to say it)
No hot water (yes, saying it twice)
No ironing (it will melt... ask me how I know)
Basically, treat your acrylic throw blanket like you'd treat your favorite cozy sweatshirt. Gentle cycles, cold water, and low heat.
Now if you'll excuse me, mine just finished drying and my couch is calling. Happy snuggling, everyone!
